The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 11/6)

*WITTY HEADER NOT FOUND*

The Sexy Halloween happened over 5 days ago, and I am still having flashbacks of one crazy-ass night. I wish I could bask in the glory that follows one of the best sets I have ever dropped, but I’ve come down with a cold and I feel miserable. So, while the rest of you are out enjoying the few remnants of Halloween shenanigans, I will be spending this three-day weekend wrapped in a healing cocoon of heated blankets, chicken soup and Vick’s VapoRub. If you don’t hear from me again by next Friday, I have died. Please bury me with my records.

On To The Calendar

Thursday 31

Halloween Party

iD Café in Sakae from 19:00

Props to Nagoya’s most known club for doing Halloween on the proper night. It’s a work night, and you’ve only got 2 of your floors scheduled to be open, but props just the same.

Friday 1

Wild Rooster

Live and Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 19:30

When I think of Swedish music, I start with ABBA and finish at Ace of Base. If I had bothered to explore the alphabet further, I would’ve discovered that they also have a rich history of rockabilly. And by “rich history” I of course mean this one awesome band. And you can’t have a 50s rock and roll show in Nagoya without Duck and the Billys! ADV ¥2800 / DOOR ¥3300

DJ Apsara Japan Tour

Club About in Sakae from 22:00
The globe-trotting DJ Apsara spins trance sets that are only second in loveliness to herself. ADV ¥2000 (1D) / DOOR ¥2000

Saturday 2

Brian Cullen and Friends

Coat of Arms in Fushimi from 19:30

In a valiant effort to breathe some life into the local singer/songwriter scene, our favorite son of Ireland is hosting what I hope will become a regular night of talented singers backed by nothing more than a guitar. He’s off to a good start with performances from Aya Kawakami and Elijah Ben (from the musical Dreamcatcher, opening on November 23) and many more. DOOR ¥500

BURLESQUE DISCOTECA

X-Hall in Osu Kanon from 21:00

X-Hall is proud to welcome the very talented burlesque dancer Odile.  Along with performances from pole dancer MIA and some belly dancers, this may not be the best event to take your boyfriend. DJs Take and Andy S. will also be there, but I doubt anyone will remember, no matter how awesome their dance-inducing sets are. DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Halloween Party

De Class in Sakae from 23:00

I’ve been a fan of DJ Real since his days spinning at STEPS. I wish all DJs, including myself, could mix an excellent taste in music with an affable disposition as easily as he seems to. I’ve only made it out to his new sound bar De Class a couple of times, but it is a great place to start and finish a wild night; made even more so true by the fact that this could very well be your last chance to wear your Halloween costume.

Physical Function

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

Featuring German DJ ATA and a lot more techno music than anyone could ever need. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Sunday 3

JUKEBOX

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 21:00
Anyone who keeps up with my Facebook feed knows that I forgo the usual fare of “selfies” and “look at what I’m eating” pics for the occasional peek into whatever record I’ve just bought. Yes, vinyl is my drug of choice, and Record Shop Zoo in Osu is my crack house. Owner DJ Kazoo knows music, and his sets are as extensive as the selection at Zoo. Catch him and a few other local DJs playing along with special guest DJ Cherry Bomb (Tokyo) on this night. DOOR ¥2000

JACK ft. Idjut Boys

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00
For 20 years, UK DJs Dan Tyler and Conrad McDonnell have been producing smooth disco house under the moniker of the Idjut Boys. DOOR ¥3500

Jah Shaka

X-Hall in Osu Kanon from 22:00

A legend of roots reggae, Jah Shaka’s sound system is a mainstay of the London scene. His Jamaican-born groove is also much-loved in Nagoya. DOOR ¥3500

Noothgrush

Huck Finn in Imaike from 17:00
This doom metal band hails from California, and their name hails from a Dr. Seuss book. I am certain the great Dr. totally had their despair-burdened “music” in mind when he penned There’s A Wocket In My Pocket. DOOR ¥3000

Tuesday 5

Nagoya Swings Intermediate Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

Nagoya Swings is offering a middle of the week chance for everyone interested in learning some new steps. This is a “Build On Your Basics” workshop, so an introductory knowledge of swing dance is preferred. They’re offering 2 bi-lingual lessons for only ¥600. Singles and couples are all welcome.

Wednesday 6

Ra Ra Riot

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

I am really enjoying the latest album, Beta Love, from this New York indie rock act. The sci-fi inspired tales of unrequited love and life in a post-human existence are a unique juxtaposition to their upbeat synthpop… uh, it’s really good! Also, popular J-rock band Asian Kung-Fu Generation opens! DOOR ¥5500
