The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 1/14)

As I enter into my eleventh year in Aichi, I am struck by the realization that I have been doing this gig for longer than any other job I’ve ever had. And I have to admit that I love it. Sure, there are the negative aspects of having to listen to terrible music or deal with reader complaints. But I still remember what it was like having just arrived in Japan, not knowing a single person, having no idea of what this city had to offer. It was isolating. I started the Events Calendar in hopes of providing even a small amount of comfort to those who also might feel lost in our adoptive home. My resolution this year is the same as the year before: keep making the EC. Surely someone is reading it.

On to the calendar!

Friday 8

Acoustic Friday

Coat of Arms in Marunouchi from 20:30

The CoA is hosting a trio of local songwriting talent this month with the lovely duet of Brian Cullen & Sarah Mulvey, a rare unplugged appearance of alt-rocker GHOST OF MATSUBARA and the folk rock of Ron Schröter. DOOR ¥500

Club Mago in Sakae from 22:00

Listen to any of her floor-shaking sets and you will understand how UK producer and superstar Flava D is the only DJ who should be in charge of your soundtrack tonight. The equally impressive DJ Swindle will also be there. Highly recommended. ADV ¥3500 / DOOR ¥4000

Saturday 9

Honky Tonk Saturday

GC Live in Shinsakae from 19:30

As a son of Nashville, I spent most of my youth trying to get away from the country western sounds that city is so famous for. But attitudes soften through the lense of nostalgia, and I sometimes find myself longing for those Jack Daniels-fueled ballads. Hearing local band Borrowed Brass is a lot like coming home to the live houses down on Music Row. Highly recommended. DOOR ¥1500

Nagoya Metro Club

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

Madame d’Metro is getting an early jump on the Year of the Monkey (kinky!). Every month her all sexuality/gender embracing party is the stuff of legend, and I am sure she has some wild tricks hidden up her sleeve (among other places) for 2016. DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

Budo Grape

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:00

Budo Grape has been working hard in the studio this year, churning out even more bouncy  singles with their unique blend of bubblegum pop and new wave rock. This Grapehead is very much hoping this means a new CD for 2016! DOOR ¥2800

The Rude Pressures

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Wailing horns and that smooth Jamaican-born rhythm; there is really no other sound like Ska, and no local band does it better than The Rude Pressures. Skank your way into the New Year! DOOR ¥3300

Reggae Oldies

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

But if you like your Jamaican sounds a bit further back than ska, than you’ll love the Reggae sets of DJs Ogawa and Takuya Kitayama from Osaka, full of Bob Marley, Lorna Bennet, The Pioneers and all the greats. DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

DJ Ogawa will once again be manning the decks for another epic progressive mix at his monthly house party. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

X-HALL in Fushimi from 22:00

Though mostly known for the harder sounds of EDM and trance, X-Hall sometimes shows its chiller side by hosting amazing progressive and deep house DJs like Cid Inc from Finland. DOOR ¥3400

Sunday 10

Just a little Swing

LDK Book Café in Kakuozan from 14:00

The jump, jive and wail of swing dance is going strong in Aichi. If you want to learn some of that fancy footwork, than join the Nagoya Swings troupe for a day of intro lessons, dance performances and the live music of BLUEFROG along with DJ Motoki of Scorpion Death Rock. DOOR ¥2000

Chip The Blues Away

Shooters in Fushimi from 18:30

The options for local live music is astounding this weekend. And even if you somehow bent space and time in order to attend every event, you’d still only break the surface of the deep pool of talent. Wade further in at Shooters with the sexy soul and fitful funk of The Tomo Shaga Tribute Band, along with James and Friends, Bob Vidler, Brian Cullen & Sarah Mulvey and the Chubby Gang. DOOR ¥300

Gotham City Live in Shinsakae from 18:30

GC Live is quickly becoming THE spot for live local music. On this night they are spotlighting two of Nagoya’s most talented songwriters, Luke Stoltenberg and Mark Oman. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Belgian producer Peter Van Hoesen’s techno mixes are so subtlety intense, you may find yourself on the dance floor with no recollection of how long you’ve been dancing. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Parallel World, vol. 4

Club About in Sakae from 21:00

Club About is a laboratory for testing new sounds and fashions on the Nagoya scene. The results may vary but something memorable is always likely to occur. DOOR ¥3000

Monday 11

Monday Night Jam

Gotham City Live in Shinsakae from 18:00

This and every Monday, GC Live offers all the chance to take the stage and join a supergroup of local talent for the best jam session in town. DOOR ¥1000

Tuesday 12

Kariya Culture Center from 18:00

If you grew up in the 80s, then there’s a good chance you spent precious time putting together a mixtape with nothing but a cassette recorder and your local FM channel. And if you made a mixtape in the 80s, there’s an even better chance that it included one of the many hit singles from soft rock giants Chicago. And if you have no idea what I’m talking about, there’s a 100% chance you were conceived to one of those mixtapes. DOOR ¥9500

Wednesday 13

Adam Lambert

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 19:00

This American Idol turned pop megastar took a lot of flak for stepping into Freddie Mercury’s spotlight. But I have to say I’d already have my ticket for this show if he had brought the other members of Queen with him. DOOR ¥8500

Thursday 14

Club Orca in Osu Kannon from 19:00

I may not like EDM but I have a modicum of respect for this Italian DJ duo. From their high maintenance dos to their sleeveless tees, VINAI doesn’t just play EDM, they embrace the douchebag lifestyle that goes with it. Bravo. DOOR ¥2000
