The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 11/18)

S.A.D. Days Ahead

WTF happened to autumn?!  Not more than 6 weeks ago it was humid as the devil’s taint outside, and today I already have to break out my long johns.  I prefer cooler weather, but this is ridiculous.  The next person who tells me that there is no such thing as global climate change is getting my frost-bitten foot up their ass.

WHAT’S GOT ME BUZZ’n: Hitting the slopes!

However, if there is one happy note to this drastically colder season, it’s that ski season should be just around the corner.  And if you want to shred the primo powder (I know very little about skiing or its terminology), you’re going to have to head to Hakuba.   You’d better hurry and book your room at the best lodge in the area, The Aqua Alpine; they fill up quick.  And make sure you hit up Tracks for some warming spirits.

On to the calendar!

Thursday 15th

Wanna Be Child

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00

WBC is a long running party that dates back to when Lounge Creek was still opened.  Recently under new management, it now features a good deal of foreign DJs both new and old playing a cornucopia of house music that emphasize the vastness this dance music genre has to offer.  It may be a weeknight, but when DJs Andy S, scrying, Nick and dij play, it sounds like Saturday.

Now only ¥1500 and it comes with a FREE drink

Friday 16th

ACCJ/TJCS Champagne Ball

The Hilton in Fushimi from 19:00

The ACCJ/TJCS Champagne Ball, one of Nagoya’s most venerated events, is doing Mardi Gras this year!  Yes, Nagoya’s nobility are going Naw’leans style this Friday, with entertainment courtesy of the Obvious Circus’ own DJ dij.  You can also enjoy the sumptuous buffet provided by the 5-star chefs at the Hilton, as well as a ton of fabulous prizes to be won during the raffle, including travel vouchers from local airlines.  Mardi Gras attire is OK, so grab some beads, a mask and leave your decency at home.

Extreme Metal Over Japan Tour

Club 3 Star in Imaike from 17:30

Deals Death (Sweden), Bloodshot Dawn(UK), Serenity In Murder (Japan) and more horrendously-named metal bands descend upon an unsuspecting populace on this night.  DOOR ¥2500

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

DJs Ricky, KAZ, Maiko and Matt present a very eclectic choice of 60s music at the biggest club of the East End.  On this night you’ll hear frekbeat, Northern Soul, Bossanova, Garage and more.  DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Duck and the Billys

Lounge and Live Vio in Shinsakae from 19:00

20th Anniversaries seem to be a popular milestone this month.  Well, it couldn’t have happened to an awesomer band.  Featuring Yu, the cutest guitar slinger this side of the Pacific, and her wild beau Harry, Duck and the Billys has introduced a whole new generation to 50s rock.  This party is going to be swing-tastic!  DOOR ¥2000

Natural Rhythm

The Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

It began in Africa… tribal house emphasizes the deep rhythms that speaks to us all on an evolutionary level.  Djs Andy S, Nick Shotter and Daniel Cheah are going to take you back to your roots with this one.  DOOR ¥2000

Brian Cullen and the Shockers

Country Joe in Shinsakae from 19:00

Man, I just cannot catch a break when it comes to this Nagoya legend and his new band.  Every time they play this long-running sound bar on the east end, I am busy.  Perhaps I can pop in between Duck and the Billys set, seeing as they are just up the road for one another.  DOOR ¥500

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Drum and Bass and Burgers with DJs tA.hA.rA, Smoker, HALCYON and super duo ZIG-NINE.  DOOR ¥2000

Old Skool Hip Hop Night

Evolution Bar in Sakae from 21:00

Gonna raise the roof and roll out Old Skool jams with a style that’s bold, so cold that it’ll freeze ya, numb your mind, give ya amnesia; until last train and beyond. Drop by for the show, or stay till dawn and rock it with the crew at Evolution Bar”  DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

This chill space down the way from the Red Rock is doing a much better job with publicity these last few months, with Facebook events, admission incentives and a general idea of letting people know that they exist.  Now if they could only update their website.  ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (4D)

Sunday 18th

Nagoya Swings Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:30

Nagoya’s only international jazz dance group is starting off the New Year with a great chance for anyone to get involved in this escalating scene.  They’re offering 2 bi-lingual introductory lessons for only ¥500.  This is the best way to get introduced to ballroom dance styles such as East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and the Charleston.  Singles and couples are all welcome.

Dance Live 2013

Club JB’s in Sakae

Speaking of cutting a rug, some of the best freestyle dancers in Aichi and beyond are getting together this Sunday for a dance battle.  Seeing as this is Japan, I imagine the finally fight will somehow involve towering mecha and/or 30 second transformation sequences.  DOOR ¥4000 (1D)

Upcoming Events

November 24 David Dycus @ Country Joe
December 1 Nagoya Winter Jam @ KC Bar
