The Obvious Circus Events Calendar – Until 11/16

Though the year is winding down, the Nagoya scene is doing anything but. With December just around the corner, we’re going to be looking at enough holiday-themed parties to make even the most tenacious Scrooge jolly. And nothing gets one more in the spirit of the season than helping those less fortunate. That is why Santa and Friends Nagoya is my favorite charity. They exemplify the Christmas spirit by raising money, food and toys for orphans all over Nagoya. If you want to get involved, email them right now. Lots of kids need our help.

On to the calendar!

Thursday, November 10

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

I thought I loved the raging experimental rock of this super group before, but their newest single My Machines upped their awesomeness tenfold when they brought on Gary Numan… ask your parents. DOOR ¥5800

Friday, November 11

The Bohemians

Club Rock n’ Roll in Shinsakae from 18:30

Don’t be distracted by this young band’s habitual overuse of mascara, beneath that douchey-façade is some solid garage-born rock. It’s great to find a J-band that rises above the bubble-gum pop of their peers. DOOR ¥2000

The Bottom Line in Imaike from 18:15

It’s even better to find a band that co-opts that commercial J-pop sound to make freak-out rock. DOOR ¥3800

Armani Exchange Grand Opening After Party

Club OZON in Sakae from 20:00

Sakae has picked up yet another high-end boutique for all the fashionistas in town, Armani Exchange. And if the hype is to be believed, their street and club-inspired designs are popular all over the world and “moderately priced”; which in Italian means “ ¥10,000 for jeans.” After dropping 2 weeks pay on a new outfit, hopefully you’ll have a little scratch left to attend the party their throwing down the street with several DJs including Nagoya’s own, Nick Edges. They will be giving passes away to customers on this day that will get you in for ¥1000.

Saturday, November 12

The Brixton Academy

Tight Rope in Sakae from 24:00

This Tokyo-based new-new-new wave band goes even further to offer strong evidence that not all Japanese rock is inane. Along with Faron Square and Canopies and Drapes, there’s a lot of good happening at this show. DOOR ¥2500

Nagoya Metro Club

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

Nagoya’s premiere QUILTBAG party is turning 19 years old this month, which makes them one of the longest running events in our city. I cannot even fathom the depravity Matty-chan and crew has planned now that they’ve made it to the age of consent. DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

This monthly progressive house party features local-boy-done-good, DJ OGAWA and several others from his crew. DJ Andy S. will also be playing in the back room for the first time. So, congrats to him for landing such a great gig. If you’ve never been to Mago before, this one is a good place to start. ADV 2000 / DOOR 2500 (1D)

Bang the Drum

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

I had thought this long-running event was gone for good, but DJs DJs Noiri, Akira, Shohei and Kazuki are back for at least one more night of indie rock and more. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Sunday, November 13

Nagoya Swings Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:30

Nagoya’s only international jazz dance group is quickly becoming one of this town’s most burgeoning scenes. And, hey, it’s only 60 years too late for the swing jazz fad! They offer this monthly workshop as a way for people to get introduced to East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and the Charleston. ¥500

BENI Japan Tour

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

One half of the popular remix duo, Riot In Belgium, Beni and the other DJs playing on this night bring a style that harkens back to the good ol’ days of electro. Ah, 2003; that was a good year! DOOR ¥2500

white white sisters

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:30

Full disclosure: the white white sisters are only the opening act on this night. However, I’ve listened to a few of the tracks from headliner, The Wienners. Just leave after WWS finishes. DOOR ¥2800

Monday, November 14th

Nick Carter

Zepp Nagoya from 18:00

AKA the youngest and most talented member of the Backstreet Boys, or the older and less talented brother of Aaron Carter DOOR ¥7500 / ¥9500

Wednesday, November 16

Her Space Holiday FINAL Japan Tour

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 18:30 ( ¥3800)

Album Leaf

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00 ( ¥5000)

Marc Bianchi’s somber indietronica is going head to head with Jimmy Vale’s somber indietronica on this night designed to make hipsters gnash their teeth and lament their misfortune… more than usual. But since it IS his FINAL Japan Tour (sorry, Mr. Vale), but I will be at Her Space Holiday! Hope he plays Japanese Gum.
