The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 10/12)

WHILE MY MACBOOK GENTLY WEEPS

The shocking news of the death of Apple CEO Steve Jobs aside, there are a lot of great things happening this 3 day weekend. Unfortunately, I am going to spend the holiday in a manner best befitting my grief; playing Angry Birds and Word With Friends.

On to the calendar!

Thursday, October 6

Digitalism

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Nagoya usually gets passed over by my favorite dance music acts (Friendly Fires, you’re dead to me), which is why I am psyched that this famous German duo is bringing their tour here with Tokyo electropop quartet Mop of Head. DOOR ¥6000

Jazztronik

Bottom Line in Imaike from 19:00

DJ/producer Ryota Nozaki is famous for orchestra-filled, smooth house tracks that are so very chill. His new CD DIG DIG DIG is out now, and you can catch it played live on this night. ADV ¥4500 / DOOR ¥5000

K-Pop Night NESTAL vol. 2

The Emporium in Sakae from 20:00

Good news: for one night foreigners will be allowed into this luxurious yet notoriously J-only club.

Bad news: you’ll have to listen to Korean music. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Friday, October 7

Pig and Dan Japan Tour

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I’m a huge fan of this duo’s often subdued but never boring remixes (HOW CAN YOU HAVE ANY PUDDING IF YOU DON’T EAT YOUR MEAT!). Their set is going to be the hottest this weekend. ADV 3000 / DOOR 35000

Stereo Soul

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

DJ Primalize’s monthly tech and progressive house party is a welcome alternative to the stale top 40 parties most of the bigger clubs promote. DOOR ¥1500

The Nagoya Metro Club

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

Nagoya’s premiere QUILTBAG party is inviting you to give your costume a test run at their pre-Halloween Dress Up Ball this weekend. Of course, you could wear your Halloween-finery the second Saturday of every month, and no one there would even bat a pink-shaded eyelid. DOOR 2500 (2D)

This distinguished ska and reggae trombonist will be performing with The Rude Pressures, Nagoya’s answer to the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. DOOR ¥4300

Day In Day Out vol. 3

Live and Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 22:00

SecretSundaze

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

DJs Giles Smith and James Priestly have been known for this legendary Sunday party in London for 10 years and running. It remains to be seen how it will play in Nagoya on a Saturday. DOOR ¥3000

T.I.P. Tour

Radix in Tsurumai from 22:00

At 69 years old, Raja Ram is one of the ol…AHEM, most mature DJs still touring. Witnessing his frenetic and psychedelic sets whip a crowd into a frenzy makes one hope to be as spry and wicked cool at that age. ADV ¥3500 / DOOR ¥4000

Party Up vol. 10

Da! Bar in Sakae from 23:00

DJ PauloAtNight, the hardest working DJ in town, is going to be dropping his high energy mix of house, hip hop and reggaeton at this stylish and hot shots bar on the east side of town. WOMEN ¥1000 (2D) / MEN ¥1500 (3D) + everyone gets a FREE shot.

Canadian Thanksgiving

Shooters in Fushimi until Monday 10th

Apologies to my brothers and sisters from the North for last week’s insulting words about the origins of your national holiday. I realize that you have much to be thankful for and deserve a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings, which Shooters will be providing for you all weekend long for only ¥1,950. Even non-Canucks are welcome to participate, just try to pepper your conversation with “eh” so as to blend right in.

Sunday, October 9

Thanksgiving BBQ Mixer Party

Shonai Ryokuchi Koen from 13:00

I should probably be nice. There is a great deal of Canadians in our community that I wouldn’t want to upset. Most of Semi-On, my favorite gypsy funk band, hails from The True North Strong and Free. My good friend (and #1 on my “DO NOT PISS OFF” list), Jeff of Power English, too. So, I am putting an end to my Canadian bashing, and joining them both this Sunday for a great day of Thanksgiving food, live music and good people. ¥3000 for all you can eat and drink.  Reserve at www.mixerparty.jp before 20:00 on Saturday

Whitest Black

MyBar in Sakae from 19:00

I’ve never heard this local rock band play, but I hear they are loud, fast and free. Monday is a holiday. So, you could come out and join the moss pit all night long.

Monday, October 10

Extreme the DOJO vol. 29

Tuesday, October 11

The Alison Brown Quartet

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:00

This multi-Grammy Award-winning banjoist (there’s 5 words I never thought I’d write together) uses her picking skills to effortlessly blend jazz, bluegrass and rock together into a sound that is admittedly delightful. DOOR ¥7000

Wednesday, October 12

Tété

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:30

This soft-singing troubadour will seduce you with his beautiful music, all the more so due to the fact that it’s in French. O la la! DOOR ¥6000
