The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 10/29)

NO TIME FOR LOVE, DOCTOR BROWN

The future foretold in the classic film Back to the Future II didn’t come to pass. But I have no time to lament the lack flying cars, hoverboards or even self-tying shoes. Halloween is just one week away, and I still haven’t finished making my costume. Now, I wonder where I can get my hands on those bitchin’ cellophane visors.

On to the calendar!

Friday 23

Comedy Night

Shooters in Fushimi from 20:00

A night of chuckles, guffaws and yucks, as local funnymen Mark Bailey and Miles carver host some the standup talent of Mike Miller, Tin Lennane and Garry the Sheik. If you fancy yourself a joker, put together your best 5 minutes of material and queue up for the open mic portion at the start. DOOR ¥1200 (1D)

The Bohemians

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 17:15

These guys are the prettiest Brit-rock band to ever come out of Japan. Their latest single male bee, on a sunny day. well well well well! is an anthem to terrible Engrish in an otherwise awesome song. DOOR ¥3000

Saturday 24

Daihachi Ryodan

GC Live in Shinsakae from 19:30

To call Daihachi Ryodan Nagoya’s oldest gaijin band is technically true. They have the prerequisite foreigner in guitarist extraordinaire John Crawley, and they have been performing together for over 30 years. However, to summarize their illustrious career in such an over-simple manner detracts from the Latin-jazz-rock-reggae-psychedelic-enka-punk sound they’ve perfected. They only do a few shows a year, so you better catch this one. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Halloween Night 2015

Coat of Arms in Maruonochi from 21:00

DJ Cee2 of the SoulKitchen Party is a busy man this weekend, starting at a local fave, the Coat of Arms Pub and Restaurant. Their Halloween party is always a fun one. Not to be missed. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

I Am Robot And Proud

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:00

The indietronica of Canadian producer Shaw-Han Liem is peaceful and calming. It’s the mixtape you would use to romance your Roomba. DOOR ¥4300

MAXIMUM R&B

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:45

I have a lot of respect for the Factory for giving bigroom love to the greatest music of the 50s and 60s that you probably never heard. The best of R&B, soul, blues and jazz played on their original vinyl by some of Nagoya’s most-knowledgeable DJs. They’re even offering a complimentary dance lesson with ballroom dance expert AZUSA. She’ll be teaching the basics of Jive dancing from 22:00. DOOR ¥2000 (2D)

Murder Shack Circus

Red Dragon in Shinsakae from 17:30

A “Tragic Halloween Night” party with live acts from Demonoid 13, Spiral Circle and Vomit Monster. DOOR ¥2500

Halloween 2015

iD Café in Sakae from 19:00

iD’s week-long All Hallow’s Eve celebration starts on this night with very special guest DJ OGAWA. DOOR ¥2000

Sunday 25

Harmonium Parlour

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00 | ¥1,000)

Whether you sing, dance or perform Native American tribal chants, backward, through a vocoder while accompanying yourself on the electric cello, this open mic and art space is still the best event to see and get seen by the many talented members of our community. In the upstairs gallery this month they’ve got an exciting exhibition of tattoo art from Mano of Thunder Alley Tattoo Club. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

DJ Night – Halloween Edition

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

When asked to describe his monthly dance party with Cee-2, DJ scrying replied: “the masters of musically maniacal mayhem. Come to drop bombs on your moms all evening and through the night. One nation under the groove. Booyah.” DOOR ¥300

Monday 26

Monday Night Jam

Gotham City Live in Shinsakae from 18:00

This and every Monday, GC Live offers all the chance to take the stage and join a supergroup of local talent for the best jam session in town. DOOR ¥1000

Tuesday 27

The Velvet Teen

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:30

One of the joys of this job is sometimes after days of digging through fliers, calendars and press releases you come across a rare gem, like discovering that not only is this amazing California indie act still performing, but they are also touring through Nagoya next month for their new album, the quite good All Is Illusory. DOOR ¥4500

Thursday 29

PICOPICO

Sound Bar Mirai in Sakae from 19:00

Blending English and Japanese lyrics, chiptune samples and synth-driven beats, London electronic pop act Kero Kero Bonito is awesome! No other local band is qualified to open for them when their international tour hits Nagoya than bubblegum new wave unit Budo÷Grape. My highest recommendation (sorry, Velvet Teen). ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)
