The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 10/20)

That chill in the air, the suspicious absence of faces lost behind surgical masks, the presence of chestnuts in just everything you eat; all these signs can only mean one thing: autumn is here. And from the outset, getting barraged by 2 giant typhoons, it seems like this fall is going to be a long one. So, bundle up and stay well. You’re going to need your energy for the two weekends of insanity that will be this year’s Halloween festivities in Nagoya. Luckily for you, you can get warmed up with this week’s goings-on.

On To The Calendar

Friday 17

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00
Local producers of high energy dance music, 80KIDZ release their newest single “FACE” this weekend, and the party is at JB’s. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Apollo Base in Shinsakae from 19:00

Take 11 rock n’ roll drummers, put them on stage together and you’ve got a wall of sound that can knock you on your ass, and, I imagine, some epically pissed off neighbors. DOOR ¥3800

Saturday 18

R&R Convention

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00

It’s good to see The Tomo Shaga Tribute Band performing around town again. Nagoya is always in need of more funk and blues in our rock and roll. Along with them, you can catch Yeah You Right Band from Gifu and DJ Rikiya H., with a very special guest appearance from Ali Huggins. ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Stefan Goldmann Japan Tour

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

Where else besides About could you hear the experimental techno of German produer Stefan Goldmann? When you think of weird electronic music, let About be your go-to. DOOR ¥2,000

Pink Floyd Trips 2014

ell Fits All in Osu from 18:00

This is the best Pink Floyd cover band I’ve ever experienced. All they’re missing is a giant floating pig. Couple tabs could fix that right up. DOOR ¥4500

4th Anniversary

X-Hall in Osu from 22:00

The first time I stepped into the space that would become X-Hall, it was nothing more than 4 walls, an open floor plan and a hastily put together DJ booth. Now, only 4 years later, and they’ve already become a titan of the nightclub scene and first choice for several touring musicians. To celebrate this month, they’ve got a special performance from the CYBERJAPAN Dancers along with DJs Hisanori H and MA5AKAZ and many more. ADV ¥2900 / DOOR ¥3400

HOLIDAY vol.01

Club Mago and Lounge VIO in Shinsakae from 14:00

There are too many performers at this day-long event to list here. But trust me when I say there is something for any fan of Japanese pop music at this one. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Sunday 19

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:00

Those who don’t like Japanese pop may be quick to dismiss Budo Grape as just another saccharine band. But give them a closer listen and discover the mischievous side behind the synth chords and bubbly personalities. Like their song “F.N.T.” which can teach you all sorts of dirty Japanese words. DOOR ¥2800

Fusion Night

Slow Blues Bar in Hoshigaoka from 19:00

I’ve heard some great things about drummer Gisella Giurfa, who has organized this gathering of talented local musicians including Lesley, Coleen and Byrony, formerly of Semi-On. Slow Blues is a cool venue on the far end of the Yellow Line, and well worth the trip for so much great music.

Café Domina in Sakae from 17:00

This eclectic gathering has something for nearly every club kid: techno, house, breakbeat, electro, with one small catch. It starts at 17:00 on a Sunday. DOOR ¥2000

Halloween Cosplay Party

59s Sports Bar in Sakae from 19:00

Hosted by MIXI parties, this is an early chance to take your costume for a test-run. Entry comes with 2 hours of open bar, and there’ll also be a costume contest. DOOR ¥3500

Monday 20

The Brand New Heavies

Blue Note in Sakae

In the 90s, this UK acid jazz group hit it big with their single Never Stop. Since then… I have no idea. DOOR ¥7,600
