LIKE FUEL ON THE FIRE OF MY HUBRIS
I recently sat down with Axiom Magazine to talk about the origins of the Obvious Circus and a few of the other plates I’ve got spinning these days. Check out the short article at their website if you’re interested. There’s also a nicely done video interview, which will make it much easier to pick me out of a crowd the next time I pan the hell out of someone’s favorite band in my monthly.
On to the calendar!
Friday, October 14
Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
Local DJ duo Obrigarrd make strangely wonderful (or wonderfully strange) music full of echoing vocals, rhythmic drum lines and and mind-shifting effects. And on this night featuring hip hop artists and other bass-heavy music, they’ll fit right in. ADV 2500 / DOOR 3000 (1D)
Club Quattro in Sakae from 19:00
Mr. Blake’s music is so full of soul I was shocked when I discovered he’s a skinny white kid from London. Does that make me a racist? DOOR ¥5500
Zepp Nagoya from 18:00
Given this band’s penchant for inciting rabid fandom in seemingly sane people, it’s a safe bet that this review will elicit even more of a negative response than my send up of Linkin Park last month. So, I’ll limit myself to only a sound: Ugh! DOOR ¥7500
Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00
This oddly named party perfectly illustrates that the Domina scene is a place for people from all over to get together and destroy all preconceptions about music. Yes, after listening to the experimental electronica of SHABUSHABU and MANGIRL, you will definitely ask yourself, “Is this music?” DOOR ¥2000
The Hub in Sakae from 23:00
A lot of you are going to go to the Hub anyway, so you might as well enjoy some decent music for a change provided by DJ Cee2 and DJ Sam. You can even get a sneak peak of Sunday’s big Rocktoberfest bash with a live performance from local hip-hop legend Vinny Vintage. No cover charge.
Saturday, October 15
7th Anniversary Party
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00
For 7 years, the Plastic Factory has provided an excellent and spacious atmosphere for some of the most progressive and underground of parties. From the popular Harmonium Parlour to the numerous art house events and fundraisers, The Factory has been there for the community on numerous occasions. So, come on out this Saturday and help Heinz and all celebrate this momentous occasion. With music provided by several Plastic Factory regulars including DJs Kaoru, Nick Sharp, Nagisa and many more. DOOR 2000(includes 3 free drinks)
X-Hallin Osu Kannon from 23:00
One of Nagoya’s newest clubs is also celebrating its anniversary this month; X-Hall,placed squarely in the center of the Osu Kannon shopping arcade, is turning 1 year old. To celebrate they’re bringing together 12 DJs to lay down some smooth house beats until the sun comes up. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (+1 drink purchase)
Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00
This monthly progressive house party features local-boy-done-good, DJ OGAWA and several others from his crew. If you’ve never been to Mago before, this one is a good place to start. ADV 2000 / DOOR 2500 (1D)
Gen’s 2nd in Sakae from 23:00
Over the past few months, Gen’s 2nd has changed from a nice place to have dinner to an even nicer late night destination for a growing crowd of club kids. Check it out for yourself this Saturday with DJ PauloAtNight backed by resident DJs I Cue and 034, along with several guest performers, before the Sexy Halloween Party in 2 weeks.
Sunday, October 16
Tsurumai Park from 12:30
This may very well be your last chance to enjoy a nice day in the park before the cold and rain of the winter months make a trip outside a suicide mission; and if last year’s party is a reliable gauge, than this party will more than tide you over until spring. 6 bands are on the lineup so far, including Ghost of Matsubara, the Michael Wade Band, BLANKA, Vinny Vintage, as well as a drum circle and live art. The music is free with food and drinks for sale from Shooters.
Shiragawa Park in Fushimi from 14:00
A day of fun, friends and fancy footwork await you this Sunday, when Nagoya Swings (Nagoya’s only international swing dance group) takes their dance workshop to the park in front of the art museum in Fushimi, just down the road from Shooters. For more information, check them on Facebook.
MyBar in Sakae from
I have never heard Nagoya artist Sally Fats perform before, so I have to rely on things I’ve heard word-of-mouth to dictate this review. Uh… she (or, possibly, he) plays the piano and sings… that is all. FREE
