The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 10/10)

While the DJs may rule the end of this most awesome of months, what with a horde of Halloween parties just ready to be set loose on an unsuspecting populace, October is off to a damn fine start with a metric-fuck-ton of amazing live shows. So if you hate that it seems like everyone’s a DJ these days, and you miss good, honest live music, then get ready to spend a metric-fuck-ton of yen next week.

WHAT’S GOT ME BUZZ’n: Taiku no Hi

Another three day weekend is here, but I feel a little guilty. I’ve been in Japan for 7 years and I haven’t once stepped foot on a beach during Umi no Hi. And the closest I get to physical activity on “Sports Day”… is something I probably shouldn’t talk about here. However, if the Japanese government should ever decide to create a Biru no Hi, I’ve got that covered. Like a boss.

On to the calendar!

Thursday 4th

Tommy Guerrero

Bottom Line in Imaike from 18:30

This skater-turned-downtempo-musician is back in Japan and he’s even got a new album full of more haunting guitar solos. Very chill. DOOR ¥5500

Lee “Scratch” Perry

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Mr. Scratch may not have invented Reggae music, but I believe he was at least in the room. And though he’s 76, the man is still going strong. He even won the Grammy for best Reggae Album in 2003. Fans of dancehall and dub cannot miss this night. DOOR ¥6000

Friday 5th

Daniel Bell Japan Tour

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

With his prolific use of strange effects and sounds (or bleeps and blips in layman’s speak), Daniel Bell helped to establish the minimal techno sound. His tracks borderline on the spacey and bizarre, but that’s what makes them awesome. DOOR ¥3000

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

With a live performance from the mad acid house unit Snuff Crew and the mad dubstep of DJ Flush (both from the mad club scene of Berlin), this night is going to be, you guessed it, mad! DOOR ¥3000

Acoustic Music Live

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00

If you’re bummed that the Harmonium Parlour was cancelled last Sunday due to the typhoon, then you need to get yourself to the P’Factory Friday night for another open mic night featuring Brad Spurgeon. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Saturday 6th

Nagoya Autumn Jam

Lea Lea Hale in Fushimi from 20:00

Hey! Did you know that Vinny Vintage is hosting a party with some of the best MCs and hip hop DJs in Nagoya on this night? You didn’t? Well, you must have missed one of the 1000 posts on Facebook. DOOR ¥3000

Nagoya Friends Party

Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00 – 21:00

Last month, Nagoya Friends had an Indian theme. This time around they’ve gone Hawaiian. ¥3,000 gets you all you can eat and drink with many exciting prizes to be given away.

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

DJs Nick Sharp and Co. are celebrating one year of bringing nothing but house music to the Nagoya scene. DOOR ¥2000 (2D)

Sunday 7th

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Most of you don’t have work Monday, so you could at least stay up all night with some hard techno sounds courtesy of special guest DJ Chris Liberator. Rumors abound that the infamous SHINJI will be there as well. You cannot miss him. He’ll be the 7-foot tall robot. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Monday 8th

jizue autumn tour 2012

Apollo Theater in Shinsaake from 17:30

The nature-inspired orchestrations of jizue are no match for the drum-centric wall of sound that comes from local legends Egoistic 4 Leaves. This meeting of the jam-bands will be epic. DOOR ¥2500

Tuesday 9th

Club Zion in Kamimaezu

Mishka’s slow jam reggae, along with the downhome excellence of Golden Whiskey Jam Sound is a welcome detour from Zion’s usual barrage of neu-metal inharmoniousness. DOOR ¥3500

Joe Henry and Lisa Hannigan

Club Quattro in Sakae from 19:00

When he’s not busy making greats like Ani DiFranco, Elvis Costello and Over The Rhine sound better (if that’s even possible), Joe Henry is putting together his own collection of rare and beautiful Americana songs. DOOR ¥6000

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:00

As if there wasn’t already a ton of great music on this night (on a fucking Tuesday even!) now I have to contend with unlikely-bubbly German guitar-pop that puts me in a mind of Belle and Sebastian. Germans! DOOR ¥3500

Terry Bozzio

Bottom Line in Imaike from 19:00

Now, this one is less of a conflict for me, but that should in no way detract from Mr. Bozzio, a virtuoso of percussion. He plays what is probably the biggest drum kit in the world, it’s just a shame he uses if for fusion jazz. DOOR ¥6500

Wednesday 10th

Dirty Projectors

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

To my NAG MAG readers, I have to apologize for accidentally listing this NY experimental band as performing on Tuesday. Luckily, I won’t have to choose between them and Joe Henry. Unfortunately, I will have to choose between them and Crooked Fingers. NOOOO! DOOR ¥5800

Crooked Fingers Japan Tour 2012

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 18:30

This US indie band makes such beautiful music; full of subtle instrumentation that perfectly accentuates the gorgeous harmonies. K.D. Japon, why must you tempt me with such excellence? DOOR ¥2800
