This week we present all that we know about love, romance and celebrating Valentines Day in Nagoya – in short – not much. Our extended discussion includes special guest Ray Proper of RP3, which specializes in internet marketing and consulting.  Ray discusses his work with the Independent Business Committee of the Chubu Chapter of the ACCJ as well as his involvement with Santa And Friends which works to improve the lives of children in local orphanages.

As usual Danny is here with a list of things you can do to celebrate V Day as well as an extended weekend round up. Perk up your ears!

The music on this week’s podcast is generously provided by: The Oldtones and Adas Mexico, both winning entries in the upcoming Bands Of Japan project.

Maximum Mod vol. 12

Evanescence

Zepp Nagoya near Nagoya Station from 19:00

The nu-metal act with a name like cheap perfume returns to Japan with a new self-titled album, which sounds exactly the same as the previous two.  Still, points for consistency.  DOOR ¥7000

Saturday, February 11

white white sisters

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 19:00

The explosive WWS had a big 2011, and I cannot wait to see what they got in store for the New Year, including their new remix album re:[euphoriaofeuphobia] due out later this month.  Joining them for their Micro Kingdom Tour is the androgyny and garage rock of Droog.  DOOR ¥2500

Brian Cullen and Friends

Country Joe in Shinsakae from 21:00

Mr. Cullen’s new, yet-to-be-named project featuring Paul Rowe (bass), Erik Imai (percussion), and Robert Hewer (guitar) are performing at this charming pub that has been a part of the Nagoya music scene almost as long as Brian.  They’re welcoming suggestions for a band name, and since his last project was Iznit Obvious, he’s certainly not very picky.  DOOR ¥500

Nagoya Metro Party

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

If you need a bit of naughty to ignite your passion, the Nagoya Metro Club does naughty better than anyone.  On February 11th, the premiere Gay, Lesbian et al. party returns to Lover:Z in Shinsakae with the always over the top drag queen shows, poll dancers and a music performance from the sultry Ebony.  There is always lots of love at the Metro Club, so leave the hate at home.   DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

Rhythm Bound

Club Saru in Kanayama from 19:30

I don’t get out to Kanayama much, but if I ever did it would be to check out this club and live space.  And there’s no better reason than on this night of 1950s rock and rockabilly from bands like The Screamers, Hot Boogie 55 and Jim and The Hickey’s with DJ Suganuma.  ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Smash

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00
This monthly progressive house party features local-boy-done-good, DJ OGAWA and several others from his crew. DJ Andy S. and Nick Edges will also be playing.  If you’ve never been to Mago before, this one is a good place to start.  ADV 2000 / DOOR 2500 (1D)

Sunday, February 12

Swing Hearts Dance

The Winter Garden in Fushimi from 18:00

If you’re looking for some traditional Valentine’s fare, you can join Nagoya Swings at the Winter Garden Ballroom in Fushimi for a night of live music from The Hospys, dancing and chocolate.  This night isn’t just for couples; singles and families are also welcome.  Tickets are ¥4000, and include a few drinks and enough cheesecake and sweets to put you in a diabetic coma.

The Willows

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

Kunio Kishida is the one of the most talented slide guitarist I’ve seen in Japan.  To be fair, he’s only the second slide guitarist I’ve seen in Japan, but that should not detract from his obvious talent with any 6-stringed instrument.  Adam Demby will join him on the drums with other special guests to be announced.  Music charge ¥300

Rocka Rolla vol. 2

MyBar in Sakae from 20:00

Live music from rock band Eleven, which I really hope is a Spinal Tap reference, and dance tunes from DJ Doo Doo, which is by far the worst DJ handle ever.  FREE

Tuesday, February 14

Judas Priest

Aichi Prefectural Art Theater from 19:00

Not exactly the most romantic way to spend Valentine’s Day, but if you’re lucky they might play their heart-felt ballad “Turbo Lover”.  DOOR ¥9500

Modern Peace

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

If you haven’t already made your restaurant/love hotel reservations for Valentine’s Dat, you, my friend, are S.O.L.  Unless, that is, you want to shun the clichés and head to Club JB’s and dance the night away.  Your date will either be impressed with your originality, or jealous of sexy guest DJs Murano and IKU.  ADV ¥1500 (2D) / DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Sexy Valentine’s Party

British Pub no. 11 in Osu from 19:00
