The Hagiwara Chindon Festival (May 22, 2016)

Hagiwara Chindon Festival
A parade of Japanese street performers
May 22
Chindon is a Japanese street performance with groups of people in brightly colored clothes and clown-like makeup. Their musical style is unique and shares a lot in common with vaudeville and New Orleans-style marching bands. The bands are led by one or two drummers, one of whom – the oyakata – plays a drum that has bells, tambourine, and other percussion instruments. The performers will parade along Ichinomiya’s Hagiwara shopping street to be followed by the Chindon competition.
