When I first moved to Aichi, I thought I had been totally screwed. Nagoya may be one of the largest cities in Japan, but it’s not exactly known for its nightlife like Tokyo or for its cultural richness like Kyoto. To a newbie fresh off the boat, this town kinda sucks.
It was around that time I was given a piece of advice from someone who had lived in Nagoya for many years:
“There’s more to life here than teaching, drinking and &#$%ing. You have to get involved.”
It was with that in mind that I started writing the Events Calendar 5 years ago. And what started as a short list of things for my friends and I to do between being teachers and being inebriated, quickly grew into the promotion company, the Obvious Circus and a newsletter full of local music, art and social happenings. Before I knew it, hundreds of people were reading every week, and suddenly I was involved. Nagoya didn’t suck so much anymore.
Over the years, the E.C. has changed in appearance several times. This newest incarnation is a co-op effort with NAGMAG which makes it possible to keep even more people in the know on a more regular basis. I’m not just working on my own schedule anymore. However, the message remains the same. There’s a lot to happening in Nagoya, you just have to know where to look.
Right here, at Nagoya’s #1 source for shit to do.
On to the calendar!
