Nagoya boasts one of only six “Hombasho” Sumo tournaments held throughout the year. The “Nagoya Basho” tournament is held every July in the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium near Nagoya Castle. The tournament lasts 15 days, during which wrestlers fight in matches under a round robin system by sumo stable. Stables compete to win the basho based on the number of wins and losses in those matches. Reserved seats can be notoriously difficult to get however general admission seats are only available on the day of the tournament so if you are willing to sit anywhere and wait in a bit of a line you can get in.
