Nag Live – September, 2011

As I am on holiday this month, I am going to make this short and sweet, much to the relief of all the bands I don’t have time to be mean to.

Thursday 1st

Eric Chenaux

K.D Japon (19:00 | ¥2300)

A soft-spoken balladeer and experimental composer, Chenaux is known for his provocative manipulation of the guitar.

Saturday 3rd

Pink Bits

Plus Park (20:00 | ¥2000)

A night of good music and wearing pink, not exactly the image usually associated with this night spot.  Featuring DJs Rich Rok, Skullduggery and m@

Club Quattro (18:00 | ¥5800)

This Swedish gypsy punk band was a huge hit at Fuji Rock a few years back, and they’ve come back to give us more of their horn and accordion-driven music.

Shibata Heavy Industries

Taurus (15:00 | ¥1000)

Local guitarist Luke Stoltenberg plays for several hard rock bands, but this metal outfit is where you can really hear him shred.

Monday 5th

The Count Basie Orchestra

Blue Note (17:30 / 20:30 | ¥8700)

“The Swingingest Band in All the Land” is coming to town for 2 shows, and while I would love to jump to their sound, ‘dems a lot of bones.

Tuesday 6th

Beady Eye

Zepp Nagoya (18:00 | ¥6500)

Seems that this it’s time for all those musicians to make good on all those earthquake tickets they issued in the spring.  First to come crawling back is Oasis (minus the ego and talent of Noel Gallagher).

Friday 9th

Stereo Soul

Club About (22:00 | ¥1500)

DJ Primalize’s monthly tech and progressive house party is a welcome alternative to the stale, stock top 40 parties most of the bigger club promote.

Saturday 10th

M.O.S.H. 2011

Apollo Theater, Club Rock’N’Roll, Sonset Strip, Daytrive (13:00 | ¥3500)

10 hours of loud music from nearly 40 bands you’ve never heard of in 4 venues for a low, low price!  Where else this side of a high school talent show can you find such a good deal?

Sunday 11th

Diamond Hall (18:00 | ¥3150)

The garage-born sounds of this Tokyo band deserve your attention this month… or any month.  They come here quite often.

Club Spiral (14:00 | ¥3500)

Hatsune Miku is a 16 year old pop idol that is quickly taking the world by storm, and she is nearly 100% computer generated.  I say ‘nearly’ because her voice is sampled from human idol Saki Fujita, who will be performing on this night.

Monday 12th

Joe Lally

Tokuzo (18:00 | ¥3300)

It’s been 8 years since Fugazi went on hiatus.  And as sweet as it is to hear the somber bass lines of Joe Lally again, when are we going to get that and%$# reunion tour!?

Wednesday 14th

Linkin Park

Nippon Gaishi Hall (19:00 | ¥8800)

On the elevator ride to hell, this is the muzak they play.

Thursday 15th

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

Club Quattro (18:00 | ¥6000)

For 15 years this California band has been making ska-tastic covers of pop and rock hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s; and for starting that trend, I don’t think I will ever forgive them.

Friday 16th

Naeem Johnson

Club Mago (22:00 | ¥3000)

This Newark DJ is keeping the house music scene alive with his crowd-pleasing, energetic mix.

Sunday 18th

80’s Romance

Club Buddha (16:00 | ¥2000)

The 12th anniversary party for this town’s number 1 retro night

Wednesday 21st

Thirty Seconds To Mars

Diamond Hall (19:00 | ¥6500)

I’ve never really been kind to emo bands that visit Nagoya, and I’m not going to start now.

Thursday 22nd

Deep Space

Club JB’s (22:00 | ¥3500)

French producer Francois K, one of the forefathers of the house music scene, headlines this night underground club sounds.

Extreme the DOJO vol. 27

Club Quattro (18:00 | ¥7500)

A night of alt-rock acts from around the world including Funeral For A Friend, In This Moment, Twin Atlantic and Crossfaith.

Saturday 24th

Café Domina (22:00 | ¥2500)

I like minimal techno; preferably so minimal no one can hear it.  Ba-dump-bump-bump!

Sunday 25th

Ogre You Asshole

Club Quattro (17:00 | ¥3500)

Fans of Modest Mouse and the Talking Heads will recognize their influence on this J-rock trio.

Tuesday 27th

Morbid Angel

Club Quattro (18:30 | ¥6500)

Hailed as one of the greatest death metal bands ever, and yet they still don’t rate as big a venue as Linkin Park or Motley Crue.  Cthulhu just ain’t listening, guys.

Motley Crue

Zepp Nagoya (19:00 | ¥10500 / ¥13000)

Those who didn’t grow up in the 80s may be shocked to know that Tommy Lee and Vince Neil are famous for more than reality TV buffoonery.

Thursday 29th

Apollo Theater (19:30 | ¥4500)

Dinosaur Jr, Folk Implosion, Deep Wound, Sebadoh: Indie rock icon Lou Barlow’s resume reads like the playlist of one of my college-era mixtapes.
