NAG Live – October, 2015

As if a night out in Nagoya wasn’t scary enough already, along comes Halloween to prove the point. Every year the streets and clubs are packed to the gills with sexy nurses, scantily clad bunnies and furry onesies! But it doesn’t all happen on the 31st, there are spooky events and awesome live music on all month…

Wednesday 7

Swervedriver
Apollo Base (18:30 | ¥6,800)
After a long hiatus, British shoe gazer band Swervedriver is back with new album I Wasn’t Born To Lose You, proving they can still make despondent guitar rock as if it were 1995.

Friday 9

Thee Oh Sees
Huck Finn (18:00 | ¥4,000)
The electric and dark music from San Fran psychedelic band, Thee Oh Sees, matches the feel of this month perfectly.

Dope Jams
@OutRecord (21:00 | FREE)
Every second and fourth Friday, DJs Chris, Tom and Masaya show some love for vinyl with an eclectic mix at this chill record-store-by-day spot.

Juan Wauters Japan Tour
Kakuozan Larder (18:00 | ¥2,500)
The first of several hidden gems this month, the lead singer of NY lo-fi folk act The Beets is playing at this new hip joint in the east end, along with Ikeda Yosuke of tigerMos. Tickets are limited to only 30 people. RSVP at larder@hotmail.co.jp.

DJ BL3ND
X-Hall (21:00 | ¥4,500)
If Axe Body Spray opened a club, it would look, sound and smell a lot like X-Hall. LA DJ BL3ND, a name I assume he got off a license plate, will fit right in.

Saturday 10

Hans Condor
Red Dragon (18:00 | ¥3,500)
Back in my hometown, Hans Condor is known as “Nashville’s rowdiest band”, leaving few sets finished before destroying equipment and audience members alike. No other live house could hope to contain this destructive force better than Red Dragon. Still, stay clear from the stage if you hope to avoid a beer bottle to the noggin’.

Nagoya Metro Party
Lover:Z (22:00 | ¥2,500)
Kick off the season of the witch with Aichi’s premier LBGT party. Their pre-Halloween brooha is the best chance to test-run your costume before the 31st.

Razor Sharp
Club Mago (23:00 | ¥3,000)
UK DJs Peverelist and Hodge are known for complicated and intense sets, but the techno-philes amongst you are going to love this mix.

Disorder
Red Dragon (14:30 | ¥3,500)
In the early 80s, this hardcore punk band was known for inciting the Bristol youth with their politically-charged lyrics, and once again Red Dragon is responsible for bringing this madness to our doors.

Sunday 11

AICHI VISION 2015 at Tsuruma Park
(11:00 | ¥2,000)
The international charity film, music and arts festival returns with live music from Brian Cullen and Sarah Mulvey, Elijah Ben, StarKat, The Michael Wade Band and the Tomo Shagga Tribute Band. There will also be several locally-produced films, a performance from The Nagoya Players and much more. The proceeds go to help Santa & Friends and Hope International.

Brian Cullen
Shooters (20:00 | ¥300)
After the Aichi Vision – Film, Music and Arts Festival in Tsuruma Park, everyone is headed to Shooters to celebrate with the Irish folk music of Dr. Cullen and his ever-growing musical coterie.

Tuesday 13

MAN WITH A MISSION
Diamond Hall (18:00 | ¥5,400)
This wolf-headed nu-metal act out of Shibuya was the perfect combination of insanity and loudness needed to create the theme song for this summer’s hit film Mad Max: Fury Road. Unfortunately, the flame-spewing guitar will not be in attendance, but American rap core band Zebrahead will.

Friday 16

Hall and Oates
Aichi Arts Center (19:00 | ¥10,000)
Easily the scariest thing happening this month! Beware the man eater, my son.

MONOEYES
Diamond Hall (18:00 | ¥2,600)
This might cost me what little street cred I have, but I am crushing on the Japanese pop-punk scene right now. Bands like MONOEYES really capture the energy and sound that made me buy Blink 182 and ALLiSTER CDs (yeah, I’m old). It don’t hurt that Scott Murphy of ALLiSTER is their current bass player.

Saturday 17

LARP Event
Toyota (2 days | ¥2,000)
The Underworld Guildhouse Havenhollow will host the first ever all-English LARP campaign in Japan. A two-day event for veterans and newbies alike, they’ll start with a clinic to get everyone accustomed to the storyline and gameplay. Attendance on both days is optional, and tents are available if you want to really get into your character. For more details, email steve.sastrad@gmail.com or join Underworld LARP Japan on Facebook.

Super Karaoke Mask Party!
GC Live (19:00 | ¥2,000)
The Gotham City house band, GC Live Zombies, has an extensive catalog of songs from which you can choose your favorite and then join them on stage to sing the lead. And since this is a Halloween party, you can wear a mask to help with your fear of public performance. Check them out on Facebook if you have any special requests.

Monday 19

Kidsaredead
K.D. Japon (18:30 | ¥3,000)
Like a French version of Ben Folds, but half as awesome and twice as weird.

Thursday 22

Whitesnake
Nagoya Shimin Kaikan (18:30 | ¥9,800)
The ghost of the 80s continues to haunt Nagoya this month with the big hair sound of Whitesnake. And you can hear all the classics: Here I Go Again, Is This Love and… that’s it!? Man, that’s a lot of bones for two songs. Not even Tawny Kitaen (ask your dad) displayed on the hood of a Jaguar would make that worth it.

Friday 23

The Bohemians
Club Upset (17:15 | ¥3,000)
These guys are the prettiest Brit-rock band to ever come out of Japan. Their latest single male bee, on a sunny day. well well well well! is an anthem to terrible Engrish in an otherwise awesome song.

Saturday 24

I Am Robot And Proud
Tokuzo (18:00 | ¥4,300)
The indietronica of Canadian producer Shaw-Han Liem is peaceful and calming. It’s the mixtape you would use to romance your Roomba.

Halloween 2015
iD Café (19:00 | ¥2,000)
iD’s week-long All Hallow’s Eve celebration starts on this night with very special guest DJ OGAWA.

Sunday 25

The 59’s Halloween Party
The 59’s (19:00 | ¥1,500 or ¥3,500)
Choose from all you can eat or drink for ¥3,500 or just come and enjoy the crazy madness that is the fun and friendly crowd at The 59’s for their annual Halloween party. Special shots on the night as well.

SoulKitchen Party
Shooters (19:00 | ¥300)
When asked to describe his monthly dance party with Cee-2, DJ scrying replied, “the masters of musically maniacal mayhem. Come to drop bombs on your moms all evening and through the night. One nation under the groove. Booyah.”

Tuesday 27

The Velvet Teen
Club Upset (18:30 | ¥4,500)
One of the joys of this job is sometimes after days of digging through fliers, calendars and press releases you come across a rare gem, like discovering that not only is this amazing California indie act still performing, but they are also touring through Nagoya next month for their new album, the quite good All Is Illusory. Highly recommended.
