NAG Live – November, 2012

Friday 2

MARS

Café Domina (23:00 | ¥2,500)

Detroit house pioneer Alton Miller brings a smooth and funky rhythm to dance floors the world over, and Nagoya is honored to host him once a year. Has it been 12 months already?

Sunday 4

SMASH DX ft. Hernan Cattaneo

Club Mago (20:00 | ¥3,500)

Speaking of DJs that might as well buy property in Aichi, this must be the ninth time this Argentinian producer has made it into the live calendar. The tenth mention gets a free sandwich. Please don’t mistake my frivolity for disrespect. There’s a reason Mr. Cattaneo has made the Top 100 DJ list 10 years running, and you only have to check out Mago on this night to understand.

Monday 5

FIGHT FOR RIGHTS SP

Sonset Strip (18:00 | ¥3,300)

Also hailing from Argentinia, Captain Tifus is one of the most amazing ska bands I’ve heard in a long time. Opening band Tex and Sunflower Seed is a close second.

Tuesday 6

Hot Chelle Rae

Club Quattro (18:00 | ¥5,500)

Hey, did you know that I am from Nashville, Tennessee, better known as Music City, USA? I only mention it because so is Hot Chelle Rae. After opening for Taylor Swift on her 2012 tour, they’re bringing their admittedly catchy pop/rock to Japan. The fact that they’re easy on the eyes will go well for them here.

NO TRIGGER Japan Tour 2012

Club Zion (18:00 | ¥3,000)

America’s No Trigger avoid the pitfalls that most moderns punk bands seem unable to dodge, by not sucking.

Friday 9

Between The Buried And Me

Club 3 Star (17:30 | ¥4,900)

That’s a long name for a band, but it tells you all you need to know about their music.

Francois K.

Club JB’s (22:00 | ¥3,500)

The deep, space-born mixes of Mr. K are an amazing way to lose yourself on the dance floor while you wait for the sun to come up.

Saturday 10

The Metro Party 20th Anniversary Bash

Lover:Z (22:00 | ¥2,500)

Happy birthday to the best LGBTQ et. al party in Japan! To celebrate this record-setting accomplishment, the mistress of mischief, Madam d’Metro will be giving away 20 bottles of champagne. But in my humble opinion, it is we who should be buying her a drink. She and her wild children of the night have given Nagoya 20 years of the best music, the most talented performers and the most accepting atmosphere; all of which you can expect at this humongous blowout. Here’s to you, Metro! May your reign of the nightlife never end!

Tenniscoats

K.D. Japon (18:00 | ¥4,000)

NAGMAG favorites the Tenniscoats return to Nagoya touring with American lo-fi folk act Mount Eerie.

Sunday 11

Letting Up Despite Great Faults

K.D. Japon (18:30 | ¥4,000)

No one serves up more amazing indie bands that you should listen to than Japon. Don’t let the obscure name of this Texan group make you doubt their talent. Theirs is a dream pop to while away your Sunday.

Rudy and My People Band

Shooters (20:00 | ¥300)

Rudy, the sax-man, returns to Shooters, much to the delight of all the ladies and the chagrin of their boyfriends. But, as Rudy would say, “Sorry, cuz!”

Monday 12

Hoobastank

Club Quattro (18:00 | SOLD OUT)

It seems that whatever deal this “post-grunge” band made with the devil is still holding up. Almost 10 years after the success of “The Reason”, and they’re still selling out shows.

Thursday 15

Wanna Be Child

Club JB’s (21:00 | ¥2,000)

WBC is a long running party that dates back to when Lounge Creek was still opened. Recently under new management, it now features a good deal of foreign DJs both new and old playing a cornucopia of house music that emphasize the vastness this dance music genre has to offer. It may be a weeknight, but when DJs Andy S, Toida and Tom Langford play, it sounds like Saturday.

Saturday 17

Duck and the Billys

Lounge and Live Vio (19:00 | ¥2,000)

20th Anniversaries seem to be a popular milestone this month. Well, it couldn’t have happened to an awesomer band. Featuring Yu, the cutest guitar slinger this side of the Pacific, and her wild beau Harry, Duck and the Billys has introduced a whole new generation to 50s rock. This party is going to be swing-tastic!

NATURAL RHYTHM

Plastic Factory (21:00 | ¥2,000)

It began in Africa… tribal house emphasizes the deep rhythms that speaks to us all on an evolutionary level. Djs Andy S, Nick Shotter and Daniel Cheah are going to take you back to your roots with this one.

Brian Cullen and the Shockers

Country Joe (19:00 | ¥500)

Man, I just cannot catch a break when it comes to this Nagoya legend and his new band. Every time they play this long-running sound bar on the east end, I am busy. Perhaps I can pop in between Duck and the Billys set, seeing as they are just up the road for one another.

Mr. Cullen’s new project featuring Paul Rowe (bass), Eric Imai (percussion), and Robert Hewer

W-DOUBLE

Café Domina (22:00 | ¥2,000)

Drum and Bass and Burgers with DJs tA.hA.rA, Smoker, HALCYON and super duo ZIG-NINE.

Friday 23

SMASH DX

Club Mago (22:00 | ¥3,500)

It’s going to get epic when DJ Ogawa shares the stage with internationally-famed producer John Digweed.

Jah Shaka

Club Radix (17:00 | ¥3,500)

This legend of roots reggae returns to Radix, Nagoya’s home for Jamaican-born sounds.

Saturday 24

FULL SWING!
Dream Cube (18:00)

I’ve already used “swing-tastic” to describe the Duck and the Billys anniversary party on the 17th, so I’m at a remiss for how to detail this impressive lineup of jazz acts including AKO and Dark Blue Swingers as well as Charlie’s Playhouse. How does “amaze-swing” sound?

Saturday, December 1

Nagoya Winter Jam

KC Bar (18:00 | ¥2,500)

Let me be quite clear here: this seasonal party offers of some of the best music being produced in Aichi today. Host Vinny Vintage is a good friend of mine and I really respect his promotion of local live music. This is the best party to start your December off right, and check out this cool new bar in the heart of Sakae. Featuring performances from new RandB star Chris J, Vinny himself and several other musicians and DJs, DJ scrying will be there
