NAG Live – March, 2016

March 2016

Friday 11

The Xandra Corpora Band

Otis’ Bar (19:00 | ¥1,000)

In like a lion this month with the bluesy rock of Xandra Corpora along with the rapid fire lyrics of MC Paulie Rhyme tearing it up at the coolest music bar in Aichi.

HOPE Gala After Party

The Hilton (21:45 | ¥3,000)

This annual black tie event raises money and awareness for HOPE International, a charity that helps to provide clean water, education and other necessities in impoverished countries. Unfortunately, the main Gala is sold out, but there are still tickets for the After Party at the Hilton’s Kiwami Lounge with DJs Alff and dij.

Saturday 12

Club JB’s (22:00 | ¥3,000)

As far as club music goes, there are few more challenging than drum and bass. The fast breakbeats tell your feet to just go crazy, but the accompanying deep bass lines make you want to just nod your head in agreement. The resulting syncopation can be a challenge to the uninitiated, but the work of UK producer Sam Binga is a good place to dip your toes in.

True Classic

GC Live (19:30 | ¥1,500)

A rowdy night awaits with some good ol’ rockabilly and honky-tonkin’ with Duck and The Billys and Borrowed Brass; cowboy boots not required but highly recommended.

Sunday 13

Acoustic Night

Shooters (19:00 | ¥300)

A quick shout-out to Shooters and their event coordinator Andrea, who’ve done so much to help bring live music back to Nagoya. Thank you for providing us so many excellent nights featuring talented musicians like Ghost of Matsubara, Bob Vidler and Mike Green.

Monday 14

Heavenly Choir

Bottom Line (18:30 | ¥6,300)

Sharing their ministry through music, the Latter Rain Christian Fellowship Church choir returns to Japan, and you don’t even have to put on your Sunday best.

Tuesday 15

Tesla Manaf

GC Live

I’ve seen many talented guitarists, but the fury at which this Indonesian prodigy attacks his guitar is as worrisome as it is beautiful. I just keep waiting for his frets to come aflame.

Friday 18

Joan of Arc

Tokuzo (18:30 | ¥5,000)

I just cannot get into the discordant math rock of this Chicago-based band. I get that many think Tim Kinsella is a genius; I’m just not hearing it.

My Disco

Huck Finn (18:00 | ¥3,300)
Proof that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side; this Australian band may be playing just down the street from Joan of Arc, but their experimental post-rock is just as inaccessible.

Terror Japan Tour

Club Zion (18:30 | ¥4,500)

OK, I would much rather watch Joan of Arc AND My Disco playing at the same time, then sit through a single track from his American hardcore band. With so much excellent local talent this month, just stay indoors this night and save some money.

Saturday 19

The Jerks

GC Live (19:30 | ¥1,500)

If you labor under the misconception that music in Nagoya isn’t diverse, you probably haven’t been to an event at Gotham City in Shinsakae. This night alone feature alternative folk rockers The Jerks, the experimental electronica of J!n and newcomers Cacti Lights who were described to me as “psych-noise-country”. Highly recommended.

Plastic Factory (22:00 | ¥2,000)

When the live selections at GC leave you too wired to call it a night, head a few stations down to Imaike and party until the sun comes up with DJs Daniel Cheah, Odofuran and dij. Live performances from J!n (she’s everywhere!) and sitar hero Heinz.

Club Mago (23:00 | ¥3,000)

From the drip of a faucet to the clack of the keyboard, our daily lives are inundated with sound. German producer Sammy Dee takes the everyday and sets it to a deep rhythm producing a dance sound that’s not so much minimal as it is subliminal. It’ll have you dancing before you realize it.

Sunday 20

Nagoya Swings Live

Shooters (18:00 | ¥1500)

Nagoya Swings parties like its 1929, with the music and fashion of the big band jazz generation. This month they’ll be two-steppin’ to the country western sounds of Borrowed Brass. Show up early for a free dance lesson with their talented dance instructors.

Club Zion (14:30 | ¥4,000)

It’s never a good sign when a touring band’s press release reads “new album … out now at Hot Topic”.

Open Wide

iD Café (19:00 | ¥2,000)

A bit late to the trance resurgence party, but iD is making up for it with the inspirational trance of Las Vegas DJ Mark Eteson. This is the music that Jesus would rave to.

Noise For The Boys

Red Dragon (17:00 | ¥2,800)

Kay Kaos of Utah-based punk rockers Revolt is exactly what is missing in many other modern punk bands: a lead singer who is all out of fucks to give.

Friday 25

X-Hall (22:00 | ¥4,400)

Another trance event this time featuring Dutch producer Ferry Corsten: it’s official, this is now an epidemic.

Saturday 26

Molotov U.S.K

GC Live (21:00 | ¥1,500)

The return of this much-loved alt-rock band for two shows: starting in their old haunt in Toyohashi at House of Crazy on the 19th with the Nagoya-leg of the reunion tour on this night.

Wonderful Mosh Fes

Club Zion (17:00 | ¥2,500)
If you’re not looking to get stomped by an angry crowd set to a soundtrack of incoherent screams and blaring guitars, best stay away from this night of hardcore bands including the Boston-based Vanna.

Bottom Line. Tokuzo, Huck Finn and more (12:30 | ¥4,500)

This day long festival incorporates 10 live houses throughout the east end of town, and features popular Aichi performers like Turntable Films, MO’SOME TONEBENDER, SCOOBIE DO and noodles. Full details at

Psychedlic Aspiration

X-Hall (23:00 | ¥3,500)

The high-octane psytrance of French group Bio-Tonic reminds me of the heyday of the rave scene back in the 90s, or at least how I imagined it must have been like from watching films like Go.

Thursday 31

Hatsune Miku Expo

Zepp Nagoya (2 shows| ¥7,000)

In the future, when the robots have taken over, the human resistance will send a soldier back in time to stop the singularity before it starts. In order for humanity to survive, the virtual idol Hatsune Miku must be destroyed.
