NAG Live, March 2015

March 2015

Wednesday 4

Arch Enemy

Bottom Line (18:00 | ¥7,500)

Unearth

Apollo Base (18:30 | ¥4,800)

Two popular metal bands hitting Nagoya at the same time: Swedish death metal band Arch Enemy and American metalcore band Unearth. Man, I wouldn’t want to be a Metalhead on this night… or ever for that matter.

Friday 6

GOODWEATHER #39

Club JB’s (23:30 | ¥2,500)

Recent flak about my obvious distaste of certain music has led me to realize I should be more open. So, instead of dismissing Polish producer Hatti Vatti as just another techno DJ, I checked out his newest CD Worship Nothing. The enjoyable combination of simple rhythms and calming vocals taught me to not judge a book by its genre, except for death metal. It always sucks.

Saturday 7

Budo÷Grape

Tokuzo (18:00 | ¥2,800)

It’s as if every one of my favorite Japanese bands have conspired together to make sure I’m broke by the end of March. Baiting your cash-trap with the bubbly synth-pop of Budo÷Grape, well-played, March. Well-played.

Sunday 8

Gash

Club Buddha (17:00 | ¥2,500)

I’m willing to overlook the cringe-inducing name of this party, but only because this month’s special guest is DJ Neel from Italy. His folk-inspired mixes are so much better then so much happening in the clubs of late.
Monday 9

Judas Priest

Nagoyashi Kokaido (18:30 | ¥9,800)

Perhaps the greatest metal band ever, Judas Priest has a new album, Redeemer of Souls, and a world-wide tour to prove they still kick all the ass. If 100 bucks seems like a lot of money, consider the insurance cost of covering the 63 year old Rob Halford driving a motorcycle on to the stage.

Tuesday 10

Mogwai

Club Quattro (18:00 | ¥6,500)

Even I’m not pretentious enough to claim that I enjoy the instrumental post-rock of this Scottish band.

Wednesday 11

MEHLIANA

Blue Note (¥8,500)

Keyboardist Brad Mehldau and drummer Mark Guiliana come together in a sound that I’m just going to call space jazz.

Friday 13

Tough Cookies

Coat of Arms (19:30 | ¥500)

Denise Hewitt, Andrea Manning and Aya Kawakami, 3 of the most talented singers currently performing in Nagoya, invite you to join them for a night of music inspired by “heartbreak, revenge, and being SO over it”.

The Mighty Jah Observer

X-Hall (23:00 | ¥2,500)
This talented selector hails from Jamaica but has settled in the UK, where he spins classic dub and roots tracks for the whitest Reggae fans in the world.

Tuesday 17

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION

Zepp Nagoya (18:00 | ¥5,300)

I caught these guys in their hometown of Yokohama my first year in Japan. They had just released their seminal album Sol-fa, but I couldn’t have cared less. I was there for the opening band (The Rentals). However, I am damn glad I didn’t walkout before they came on stage and completely changed my mind about Japanese indie rock. I’m an Ajikan fan for life!

Friday 20

Hit ‘Em Up, vol. 5

CREAM Bar (3 days | ¥1500)

A weekend-long party featuring live performances from Vinny Vintage and ARI, along with several talented DJs and dancers. Ladies get in for free before 1 AM, and it’s free for everyone on Sunday.

Saturday 21

Prisca Molotsi

STAR EYES (18:00 | ¥4,000)

The diva-darling is returning to this intimate jazz club on the East End with her repertoire of well-loved R&B, jazz and gospel classics.

Sunday 22

the pillows

Zepp Nagoya (17:00 | ¥4,320)

Japan’s best and longest running indie rock band recently celebrated their 25th anniversary with a new album Moondust, their strongest effort in a long time.

Daniel Wang

Café Domina (17:00 | ¥3,000)

Daniel Wang’s love for disco and the early days of house music breathes new life into a club scene grown stale by the domination of EDM.

Spring Fling Swing & Sing Thing

Shooters (18:00 | ¥1,000)

For 9 years Nagoya Swings has been teaching this town to swing, jive and hop. Join them for their anniversary party featuring the live music of The Hospy’s, with a free dance lesson at the start for newbies.

Monday 23

Alexandra Stan

Club Quattro (18:30 | ¥6,500)

Four years ago, you couldn’t walk into a club without hearing Mr. Saxobeat, the infectious breakout single from this Romanian synthpop star.

Thursday 26

Pitbull

Nippon Gaishi Hall (18:00 | ¥10,000)

And speaking of unavoidable popular music, Mr. Worldwide returns to Nagoya, but at least this time he’s brought along the infinitely more talented R&B megastar Ne-Yo.

PUNK SPRING 2015

Zepp Nagoya (18:00 | ¥7,000)

The raucous 2-day festival is back with another amazing lineup including Rancid on Thursday and Fall Out Boy on Friday. The two-day pass for ¥13,000 is basically a must.

Friday 27

Astrix

X-Hall (22:00 | ¥4,000)
If you find psychedelic trance too intense, then the “full-on” mix of Israeli producer Astrix will basically give you an aneurysm.

Saturday 28

Imaike Go Now

Bottom Line, Tokuzo, Club Upset, Huck Finn, 3 Star and more (12:30 | ¥4,500)

Imaike is a nice town whose large foreign population, rich culture and just a plethora of weirdness helps it stand out as something more than just another suburb of Nagoya. This live event, spread across 9 venues in Imaike (and “only a little Ikeshita”) includes an amazing lineup of local and visiting bands, including OGRE YOU ASSHOLE, Polysics, Mo’some Tonebender and The Novembers.

Sunday 29

Sontag Shogun

K.D. Japon (18:30 | ¥2,500)

If you can get past the challenge of listening to experimental, ambient music live, then you will be rewarded with the beautiful, sad & inspiring music of this American trio.
