Nag Live – January, 2012

Tuesday 3rd

Kerri Chandler Japan Tour

X-Hall (21:00 | ¥4000)

As one of the godfathers of house music, ‘Kaoz’ Chandler has been producing deep four-to-the-floor dance music since the early 90s.  Along with DJs Take, Andy S. and more, X-Hall is off to a strong start for 2012.

Sunday 8th

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Club Quattro (18:00 | ¥6000)

Of all the bands visiting this month, I am most excited at the chance to get to see CYHSY again.  And going on their excellent new CD Hysterical, this is going to be another night of rock-driven dancing.  If only they’d pick a different venue.  I’m getting sick of paying the Quattro tax.

One On One

Club Mago (23:00 | ¥3000)

Given British DJ Nick The Record’s love affair with vinyl and passion for a variety of styles, no one can really say what to expect on this night except that it will be old school and legendary.

80’s Romance

Club Buddha (14:00 | ¥2000)

This retro party has everything we children of the 80s love: the hottest New Wave, post-punk and pop music that reminds us of our adolescence, plus a very early start that matches our current lifestyle (we are nearing 40 after all).

Radix (21:00 | ¥3000)

The fashionably alluring Mademoiselle Yulia rules as a DJ of the Tokyo electro scene, but with the release of Mademoworld, her singing debut, it’s clear that her ambition and talent reaches even further.

Monday 9th

Bo Ningen Japan Tour

Apollo Theater (18:30 | ¥2800)

This UK-via-Japan band makes music best used to soundtrack an acid flashback.  And opening bands Psysalia Psysalis Psyche and HOT HOT SEX are almost as trippy.

Wednesday 11th

Club Quattro (19:00 | ¥6000)

It’s a sad fact that even the edgiest of bands will grow dull over time.  Besides the never-to-be-released single “Fuck Everything”, this popular Brazilian band’s newest album, La Liberación lacks teeth.  Do yourself a favor, avoid the Quattro tax and just listen to a copy of their debut album on this night instead.

Friday 13th

Zepp Nagoya (19:00 | ¥6800)

Saturday 14th

The Secret Sexy

Gen’s 2nd (19:00 | ¥2000)

The Sexy parties made a huge impact on the Nag-scene in 2011, and their starting 2012 off with a clandestine twist that even I am not aware of.  Seriously, your guess is as good as mine.

No Woman No Cry

Music Bar Bob (19:30 | ¥2300)

This new joint has shot to the top of my list of favorite things of 2012 by being both a new sound bar and the host of the only all-female performers night I am aware of, twice a month even!  The inaugural night features the soulful Lyco from Osaka with a number of equally talented locals.

Sunday 15th

Diamond Hall (17:00 | ¥6900)

With their crowd-pleasing renditions of rock classics such as Welcome To The Jungle, this young duo does for the cello what Yo-Yo Ma in his infinite talent never could; make it cool.

Wednesday 18th

Fleet Foxes

Club Quattro (19:00 | ¥6300)

The Grammy-nominated goodness that is their newest album is a damn fine reason for me to put aside my Quattro-boycott for another week.  I’m a sucker for beautifully crafted baroque folk.

Pet Bottle Ningen

K.D. Japon (19:00 | ¥2500)

A sound that could only be birthed on the creative streets on downtown NYC; ultramodern, rule-breaking and chotto terrifying

Saturday 21st

Diamond Hall (19:00 | ¥6500)

I love my job if for no other reason than it warns me that some awful bands are still making music and cannot yet be removed from THE LIST.  Opening band Kids In Glass Houses, you’re on it now, too.

Wednesday 25th

Simple Plan

Club Quattro (19:00 | ¥6300)

SOLD OUT… so I guess you’ll have to go elsewhere for your supply of near-punk pop.  May I suggest a 13-year-old’s birthday party?

Thursday 26th

Wanna Be Child

Club JB’s (21:00 | ¥2000)

Project Stroke and DJ Take present a real house music party for real house music fans along with Andy S., dij and YU-I.

Friday 27th

Grand Opening Party

Amateras Lounge (Friday and Saturday)

From what little I can garner from their website, this stylish lounge could become a very popular addition to the Sakae nightlife.  They certainly are starting off with a bang, bringing two amazing DJs to the decks for their grand opening weekend: Marc Panther (Friday) and DJ Kaori (Saturday).

Gen’s 2nd (23:00 | WOMEN ¥1500 / MEN ¥2500)

But Amateras has a long way to go if they want to top last year’s new hotspot, Gen’s 2nd.  Their ultra-trendy atmosphere and popular international DJs are a hard combo to follow, as shown on this night with DJs PauloAtNight, dij and more.

Saturday 28th

Rachael Dadd

Tokuzo (19:00 | ¥2500)
Last year I had the pleasure of sitting down with this very talented musician from Bristol, England to talk about her gorgeous folk songs and equally lovely art.  She’s returning this month with a new album, “Bite The Mountain”, and she’s once again performing with one-man band superstar, ICHI, along with other special guests.  For more details, check out Tokuzo’s new English website.

Fuck Rock Festival, vol. 41

Plastic Factory (22:00 | ¥2000)

Those not a fan of Metallica, Green Day, AC/DC, Rancid and the like need not attend this regular party unless they want to have their faces rocked-off.

Sunday 29th

The Damned

Club Quattro (19:00 | ¥6000)

Unlike some of their younger counterparts, the gothic punk of this iconic band has really stood up to the decades.  It must have something to do with only releasing one album every 7 years.
