Calling Jamie a barman is something of a misnomer. Perhaps a more accurate description would be: a superlative curator of outstanding beers.
You see, Hopbuds is a drinkery with a difference. Rather than being just another bar, it is predominantly about fantastic brews over which strangers can connect; something pretty unusual in Japan. In fact only last week three guys came in separately, got chatting, and the next thing you knew they were sharing a three-litre bottle of Stones’ Double Bastard. It’s that kind of place.
The drink: Melange No. 1 from The Bruery
With 120 bottles, Hopbuds has the widest range of beers in Nagoya, and Jamie recommended for me something pretty exciting.
This Melange No. 1 is the first time that south California’s famed The Bruery has made a blended beer. They’ve mixed a Flemish red Oude Tart with the strong imperial stout Black Tuesday before aging it in bourbon barrels to make a quite outstanding brew. Complex, sour, with chocolate and cherries, it’s a beast of a beer.
