In Europe in the time of Renoir, the late 19th and early 20th century, a period in which modernization brought about by the Industrial Revolution advanced, the lives of the people changed dramatically. Gaslit streets, glamorous theaters – towns transformed into cities and places of inspiration. But the sudden growth in population saw a deterioration in living conditions and the gap between the wealthy and the poor grew. This exhibition looks at life in modern Europe through 89 works, consisting of oil paintings, prints and photographs, primarily from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection.
