Nagoya will be turned into a heaving dance floor this weekend with the 17th Nippon Domannaka Matsuri, or Domatsuri. This is the biggest dance festival in the Chubu region and will fill our streets with culture, colour and movement unlike anything you’ve ever seen (unless you went last year. And if you did, you will probably go this year, because it was so awesome).
This festival draws dancers from all over Japan and the world, who don original costumes, representing different cultural heritages, and perform to original music. When the festival was born from an idea of a couple of college students over 15 years ago, there were only 26 groups of dancers and 1500 performers. Today sees a massive 23,000 participants and 210 dance teams.
And the Guinness Book of Records recognized the festival in 2010 for having the Largest Naruko Dance in the world!
If you’re only in Nagoya for the weekend, or if you’ve been here 20 years, this festival is definitely a highlight on Nagoya’s festival calendar. Join in the dance fever!
